Capper and Jemaine (Flight of the Conchords) Clement's comical duo — one loquacious, one laconic — stood out from the flock amidst 100s of entries in the trans-Tasman Nescafe Short Film Awards, sharing first prize in 2001. Further occasional installments of The Pen were made over the next decade and shown online, and in 2010 Robert and Sheepy’s woolly wisdom was brought to TV audiences as a segment in sketch show Radiradirah.
Hip hop DJ/ producer P-Money (Pete Wadams) talks about a career born from very modest beginnings in this episode from a series for secondary school music students. After initial attempts at scratching on his father’s turntable were quickly rebuffed, he began making music using twin cassette decks. Success in DJ contests followed; and creating his own beats led to collaborations with acts including DLT, Scribe and Che Fu. He describes the process where his music for Scribe’s ‘I Remember’ was built up from samples from a particularly unlikely source.
This long-running travelling TV game show pitted towns against each other in a series of colourful physical challenges. The 1986 final takes place at Lower Hutt’s Fraser Park, where teams from Alexandra, Timaru, Whangarei (including future All Black Ian Jones) and Waihi compete for civic bragging rights. Hosted by Bill McCarthy and Paddy O’Donnell, with officials Melissa (Miss Top Town) and champion Olympic kayaker Ian Ferguson. A Taniwha, cross-dressing cheer squads, a Para Pool, and slippery slope, all make for much light entertainment malarkey.
This classic soft drink advert saw a supergroup of 80s Kiwi music talent cooling off in a steamy L&P factory. The industrial-strength line-up — When the Cats Away’s Margaret Urlich and a blink or you'll miss her Annie Crummer; Ardijah’s Ryan and Betty-Anne Monga; Erana Clark, Peter Morgan, and DD Smash drummer Peter Warren — belt out a 60s Motown song (produced here by Murray Grindlay) in the heat. Fane Flaws plays a supervisor loosened up by “the thirst quencher”. ‘Heatwave’ was a hit single in late 1987, with the group named ‘80 in the Shade’. The ad was named the year's best.
Alternative rockers Elemeno P seemingly came out of nowhere in 2003, when their debut album Love and Disrespect sold 45,000 copies led by singles originally recorded in the founding members’ living room. The same year they played support for US acts Sum 41 and Good Charlotte. Three years later, and with a second album, 2005's Trouble In Paradise, under their belts, the band was named Best Group at the NZ Music Awards. Infectious single 'Baby Come On' from their third album featured on a high profile TV ad (a rock-your-cubicle concept for Telecom) and its anthemic chorus had Kiwis dancing in their living rooms.
Regarded as one of New Zealand's pre-eminent producers and DJs, P-Money (Peter Wadams) shot to mainstream recognition in 2002 for his work with hip hop hero Scribe on 'Stop The Music' - a No.1 single that featured on Scribe's double platinum-selling Magic City. Awards followed, with the Auckland producer taking Best Male Solo Artist and Best Hip Hop Album at the 2005 NZ Music Awards. P-Money hit number one on both the singles and radio airplay charts in 2008 with the pumping dance collaboration (with Vince Harder), 'Everything'.
Producer Grahame McLean was one of the pioneers of the New Zealand feature film industry. In his long career, he was worked in many roles - props manager, assistant director, production manager, line producer, director, scriptwriter and producer. His first job in the screen industry was on the early 70s independent TV drama The Games Affair, and he went on to produce films including Sons for the Return Home, A Woman of Good Character, and Should I be Good? The special guest interviewer is McLean's industry colleague John Barnett.
