In this clip, iconic reggae band Katchafire perform their hit ‘100’ in te reo. The song is an ode to the mums and wives who hold it down at home, while the band is away on tour. Lead singer Logan Bell (Ngāti Toa Rangatira) makes a small but significant act of reclamation — of a language lost to his mother Haneta. 'Karawhuia' got to number two on Ngā Waiata Kairangi, the recently launched te reo Māori music chart. The song featured on the second episode of web series Waiata Anthems. It was translated by mātanga reo (language expert) Paraone Gloyne (Ngāti Raukawa ki Wharepūhanga, Ngāti Maniapoto).
It's an anthem for our girls when we're gone ... it's [also] about women who support their whānau, their tane, supporting their dreams.– Katchafire vocalist Logan Bell in The NZ Herald, 24 May 2021
