The Hard Stuff With Nigel Latta - Screenagers: Living Online

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2016

Is that music to your ears now?
– Nigel Latta watches as Sarah reacts to the series of 'pings' after finally getting her iPhone back
See I think that's fantastic and the psychologist in me says these guys, even though they're young people they really know what they're doing and why they're doing it ... I just love that idea that young people are coming up with solutions to problems and it's working and it should be everywhere.
– Nigel Latta is impressed by anti-bullying school programme Sticks and Stones
I think there's a lot of finger-crossing going on out there, where we're hoping our kids will get through OK...
– Internet safety expert Brett Lee on parents of teens who are able to go online
For our generation our phone and the internet is like another limb; the whole world is kind of just right here in my palm. That's why if you're getting bullied online ... it's really devastating, because it's like you're losing this whole other part of yourself, and you feel like you can't go on it anymore, or that it's not safe.
– Teenager Maddie on the impact cyberbullying has on teens in the digital age
The online experience is...I'd say it's ten times better than real life.
– Teen gamer Robert on his enjoyment of online activities, at the start of this episode
I think we can't afford to leave young peoples' sexuality education to the porn industry.
– Youth and pornography researcher Maree Crabbe on the disturbing trend of sex education via online pornography
A guy who basically spent his career in the police posing as a predator told me that the first question online predators will typically ask children is 'Who can see your screen?' And if the answer they get is, 'No one, I'm in my room', then the conversation shifts into a different gear. Whereas if they say I'm sitting in the kitchen and my family's here, then they disappear and go off to find someone else. Things like that are super helpful to know as a parent.
– Nigel Latta offers practical advice to worried parents, The Sunday Star-Times, 26 August 2016
The technology at one level is designed to be addictive and so we shouldn't be surprised that it's addictive in the same way that shopping or watching television can be addictive...
– Social scientist Luke Goode on the seductive design of smartphones and online games
I look at it as a really harsh lesson, but also a really great lesson. I don't care what people think...chances are you probably don't know me anyway.
– Teenager Maddie on her own experiences with cyberbullying
The thing about technology and the internet is that it's not necessarily good or bad, it's a thing — but there are both good and bad things that can come from it. Technology affords young people opportunities that our generation never had. There are whole new careers out there that we don't even know about yet
– Nigel Latta on the debate about the nature of technology, The Sunday Star-Times, 26 August 2016
