Mataku

Television, 2002–2005

Described as a "Māori Twilight Zone", Mataku was an award-winning series of half-hour supernatural tales. Two seasons of the South Pacific Pictures show screened on TV3; a third screened on TV One in 2005. Each episode was introduced by actor Temuera Morrison. Created by Carey Carter and Bradford Haami, the bilingual series was a strong local and global success. Carter spoke of how the show turned the spirituality of the Māori "into stories so that the rest of the world can get a glimpse of that aspect of our culture".
