Spooky anthology series Mataku draws from the supernatural world, to bring Māori stories to a wide audience. In this bilingual 'making of', everyone from actors to set designers discuss collaborating on the show. The documentary unveils how the stunts, makeup effects and otherworldly production design were achieved. The mainly Māori cast and crew talk about dramatising traditional stories for contemporary settings. Bradford Haami, who co-created Mataku with Carey Carter, discusses researching potential stories, guided by kaumatua, and adapting old Māori tales for a contemporary audience.
I think that one of the big things about the series has been the faith that the producers have had in new people . . . a real important part of what the series has done is to bring a whole new generation of filmmakers, working on projects that they're very passionate about, into the industry.– Writer and director Michael Bennett
