Maurice and I

In 1958 Christchurch architects Miles Warren and Maurice Mahoney began a long and illustrious partnership, designing some of New Zealand's most distingushed buildings and inspiring what became known as 'the Christchurch style'. Maurice and I examines their achievements, notably the renowned Christchurch Town Hall. After the devastating 2011 earthquake the pair faced a bitter fight to save the iconic Town Hall from demolition. In this trailer, the pair discuss their contrasting personalities. Designers, historians and politicians recall the fraught decisions hanging over post-quake Christchurch.  

Maurice and I is just a terrific wee film. There is a slew of New Zealand social history here, as well as a neatly condensed and focused history of architecture in the 20th century, all wrapped around a love letter to the city of Christchurch and a few of the people who have made it the place that it is.
