Memories of Service 4 - Frank Sanft

I saw troops and trucks scattering away a bit and I’m standing out there with my rifle. And an American guy came by, crouching down and he said ‘Goddamn it piss off… there are snipers!’ And I was standing there on guard. No one had told me what to do if there were any snipers, and there was me with a 303, no ammunition and a bayonet stuck on the end.

We got into Changi, boy, what a sight. These soldier with distended stomachs, skeletal, and they were so pleased to see us.

It was just an eye-opener to me how the Americans won that war, with 1000s of troops who had very little training but they were very good at what little bit they had to do, and that’s how they were so successful.
