A Jap had come down and bombed an LST [landing ship] that had stuck her nose up on the beach, and had her doors open and was offloading Americans. And that’s when I really experienced what war was all about. It was an absolute shocker.

The next minute the concussion hit us. They were offloading an ammunition ship at the wharves and she blew ... and the only thing left of her was the bow and number one hold. The rest of the ship was gone; it was all over the city, the Bari city.
