Nice Day for An Earthquake

Jakob , Music Video – 2001

from the album Subsets of Sets (2001)

Shot at the top of the magnificent Te Mata Peak, Ed Davis' spectacular one shot video appears devilishly loaded. Opening on a transmitter tower, Davis pans to discover our brooding hero slouched in front of a television. Cropping the image to widescreen allows Davis to cleverly frame the action, and draw attention between scenery and action, as our axe wielding hero busts a valve, unleashing a world of hurt upon the offending appliance. Backing away from the dispute, amidst breathtaking scenery, the camera closes in on the root of evil — the loathsome tower.

'Nice Day for an Earthquake' was my first experiment with a Steadicam that I just got over from the States . . . The Steadicam's great, because it means I can pick up the camera and move around real smooth, all in one shot.
– Ed Davis talks about making this video, in an episode of arts show The Living Room (season three, episode five)
