Te Piringa

Len Blake featuring Nikau Te Huki , Music Video – 2023

Living abroad in London, Len Blake reflects on staying connected to loved ones from afar with her track 'Te Piringa', meaning "connection" in te reo Māori. The video intertwines Blake performing with London-based kapa haka group Ngāti Rānana in Finsbury Park. Meanwhile, from his studio in Wellington, Nikau Te Huki contributes rich guitar melodies and vocals. Recorded across different countries, their combined harmonies evoke a sense of connection, bridging communities across the globe. 'Te Piringa' was Blake's first song in te reo, with lyrics translated by Te Huki. It was produced for series Waiata Anthems.

'Te Piringa' is a waiata about being away from the people you love, and missing those loved ones a lot, it's a waiata te reo Māori. I think trying to use more te reo Māori and incorporate Māori values into our lives more, it's such a cool experience to be able to do that on the other side of the world.
– Musician Len Blake on working on 'Te Piringa' in London, in episode 11 of Waiata Anthems' 2023 season
