Weta formed in Wellington in 1995, after lead singer and creative force Aaron Tokona met drummer Clinton den Heyer at Rockquest. Guitarist Gabriel Atkinson and Tokona’s bass-playing brother Clinton — better known as Tookie — would complete the foursome. After extensive touring — including opening for Foo Fighters and Soundgarden — and a move to Melbourne, Weta released their sole album Geographica in 2000. Two months later, with platinum album sales and a much-anticipated Australian album release on the horizon, the band called it a day. A reunion tour followed in 2008. Aaron Tokona died suddenly in June 2020.
