On 2 March 2017 Auckland-born Lorde (Ella Yelich-O'Connor) dropped the first single from her second album Melodrama, and signalled a new obsession: the dance floor. While 'Green Light' didn't repeat the stratospheric success of her first single, it topped the Kiwi charts and made the top ten in Australia and Canada. 'Green Light' is a phoenix from the ashes of heartbreak, Lorde's lyrical skills on display: "She thinks you love the beach, you're such a damn liar". The video luxuriates in a physical 'letting go'. Lorde navigates sweaty New York nightspots, only to find release dancing solo in the street and on top of her Uber.
The song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes, and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards. It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense, obviously.– Lorde (Ella Yelich-OConnor) describes 'Greenlight', in a 2017 Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe
