Neighbourhood - Te Atatū (with Oscar Kightley)

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2012

Oscar Kightley (bro'Town, Sione’s Wedding) returns to his childhood suburb of Te Atatū, split by State Highway 16 but united by community. He meets English artist Carol Green, who shares a sculpture inspired by local flora and fauna, and Mexican migrant Marcella Macias, serving authentic street food from her food truck. At the Croatian Cultural Society, Kightley sees how members celebrate their heritage together, while Filipino newcomer Edison Dumo organises a Neighbour's Day street party. Along the way, Kightley reflects on Te Atatū’s evolution from modest suburb to lively hub for city workers.

The godwits are an interesting bird. They fly all the way to Alaska and they come back to exactly the same place every year. So I chose them partly because of that distance that they fly but also I wanted to draw parallels between that distance and them coming from a long way away to all of the people of New Zealand, having come from somewhere else.
– English artist Carol Green on her sculpture for the Te Atatū sculpture trail
