Play It Strange is a nationwide songwriting competition that gives teenagers incredible opportunities to record music, play live for industry professionals, and gain knowledge from iconic musicians. This television documentary follows some of the 2006 finalists (and eventual winner) on their journey, and also interviews the judges. Led by Split Enz bassist Mike Chunn, the panel includes Jordan Luck of The Exponents, classical singer Yulia, hiphop artist Ladi 6 and Rock Shop NZ representative Hamish Jackson. The 45 minute special travels the country, visiting the talented (and unintentionally fascinating) high schoolers.
The songs that are entered are judged only on their creative content. The lyrics are judged 50 percent, the music 50 percent. If it's sung out of tune, played out of time, recorded on the crappiest little ghetto blaster we don't care. As long as we can hear what the song is and what it might be, then it's judged on that basis.– Play It Strange head Mike Chunn
