Rural Delivery - Series Seven, Episode Six

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2011

Rural Delivery covers the latest in issues affecting New Zealand’s primary industries, with weekly headlines showcasing the industries' movers and shakers. In this episode, Dr John Clayton introduces hornwort, an invasive aquatic plant species threatening our lakes and rivers, as well as NIWA's plans to eradicate it. In Motueka, Heath Wilkins talks about how his family-owned Birdhurst Orchards is diversifying, growing everything from Royal Gala to Pink Lady and Fuji apples. The episode concludes with an interview with Auckland A&P President Bruce Orr on how the A&P Show has changed over its century-long history.

It's basically a plant that can grow in a wide range of habitats, it grows really really tall — dense — and it displaces all our native plants. It has quite a big impact on water quality in the lakes and ponds and reservoirs and drainage irrigation ditches where it grows.
