The Grass is Greener - Jane Campion

Television (Full Length Episode) – 1991

Director Jane Campion has recalled how leaving New Zealand was part of a process of reinventing herself. This episode of the series about Kiwis doing well in Australia concentrates on Campion's early career across the Tasman. Campion and actor Kerry Fox are also seen completing their breakthrough drama An Angel at My Table. Campion describes the "extraordinary insights" gained from truthfulness. She recalls Sydney's Australian Film, TV and Radio School as "outrageously conservative". Colleagues mention how the teachers had a low opinion of Campion's films, which later triumphed at the Cannes Film Festival.

What Kerry Fox brings to the Janet Frame character is an immense honesty and freshness, which to me is Janet anyway. Her commitment was extraordinary and it was very much something that drove me on. I had to match her, and likewise she had to match me.
– Jane Campion on Kerry Fox, the star of An Angel at My Table
