For over four decades, Don McGlashan's music has shaped the soundtrack of New Zealand, from his post-punk beginnings with Blam Blam Blam, to the theatrical antics of The Front Lawn and the enduring hits of The Mutton Birds. This feature documentary uncovers the life behind the lyrics — the early days, life on tour, fatherhood, and the creative force behind the music. Directed by Shirley Horrocks and told largely in McGlashan's own voice, it features candid interviews with family and friends (including Neil Finn and Toa Fraser) alongside a trove of archival footage capturing his life on stage and behind the scenes.
When words stick to melody, a powerful bond is created, and that bond goes back to some old parts in our brain. It challenges me, and moves me, and I'm on the trail of it... and it's the best thing in the world.– Don McGlashan on what draws him to songwriting, in this trailer
