Down in the Boondocks

D-Faction , Music Video – 1995

On D-Faction's biggest hit, American Joe South's 60s classic 'Down in the Boondocks' gets a Pasifika, pop-reggae treatment, complete with Cook Islands style drumming. Thanks to clever production design by Hallelujah Picassos member Peter McLennan, an Auckland studio was transformed into a factory — with help from a heavy-duty smoke machine and long lenses. The track was nominated for Single of the Year at the 1996 NZ Music Awards, but lost out to the unstoppable 'How Bizarre'. This clip sits early in director Jonathan King's 100+ run of music videos (he made four for D-Faction).

It was entirely shot in a studio, it was all smoke and mirrors to make it look like an industrial hellscape... it looked very strange in the room — it didn’t look like that at all in the room.
