When guitarist Johnny Volume met Englishman Brendan Perry at a party in 1977 he knew he'd found his missing link. Volume, Perry (renamed Ronnie Recent) and drummer Des Truction (born Simon Monroe) became The Scavengers, who released iconic punk single 'Mysterex'. Relocating to Australia and relaunching as The Marching Girls, the trio produced this track in 1980. Chiming guitar chords kick off a lean and mean slice of garage pop. The video shoots straight from the hip: the Girls play against a sea of sickly green, Volume sports a band aid, Des Truction wins best sunglasses and Perry is a picture of punk nonchalance.
It was very crowded when we arrived, but she spotted him and took me over to meet him. I liked him instantly … short haired and skinny with a great accent. I asked him if he could play bass. He said he played guitar but could learn bass really fast. I said, “Welcome to The Scavengers”.– Guitarist Johnny Volume on meeting British born vocalist and bassist Brendan Perry at a party in 1977, AudioCulture
