Hard Out - Full Series

Television (Full Length Episodes) – 2003

This is the emergency supply, from the armpit microwave!
– Noodle (Victor Barlow) explains how he keeps his noodles warm, in episode one
What would aliens be doing in Middledon bro?
– Jeff the doubter (Ben Castles), in episode one
That says EON DAB...you did it in the mirror!
– Jeff (Ben Castles) on Noodle (Victor Barlow) trying to say 'NEO BAD', in episode eight
And when we drain the estuary to create a new surf beach, it will be a win-win situation.
– Astrid (Katherine Kennard), in episode one
This old proverb I made up just now goes: ‘if a person has a pone pone taila he must have a pone pone bum for a face’, which means their brains are horse**** ... you know?
– Gran Pekapeka (Rawiri Paratene), in episode one
Mud is very therapeutic for your skin. They use it as a beauty treatment! I'm going to be very beautiful...
– Brian (Owen Black) gets naked, in episode four
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Brian.
– Jeff (Ben Castles) after Brian (Owen Black) tells him that he's started to grow a heart, in episode twelve
I am Bugs, and these are my geeks.
– Bugs (Rafe Hampson) introduces himself to the boys, in episode five
Yeah, with me and Nood it's obvious...superior brain power.
– Jeff (Ben Castles) on him and Nood (Victor Barlow) being too smart to be brainwashed, in episode 10
He’s smarter than he looks and he has a unique combination with his mate Jeff. Noodle doesn’t really think he’s a brainy guy but he does just come up with these ideas and half the time they’re pretty good ideas. Some are fairly stupid ideas too.
– Actor Victor Barlow describes his character, Noodle, on the Hard Out website
There’s something really attractive about Jeff and Noodle in terms of being very likeable characters. I really like the way their bizarre logic works.
– Director Chris Bailey on the relationship between Jeff (Ben Castles) and Noodle (Victor Barlow) on-screen, on the Hard Out website
We actually auditioned women too, but Rawiri gave a great mixture of being loving and being cantankerous and it just kind of gelled. He’s also very funny.
– Director Chris Bailey on casting Rawiri Paratene as Gran, on the Hard Out website
The consensus was that 10 to 15-year-old boys are very media savvy, very interested in computer games, individual pursuits like skateboarding, and sexuality (not necessarily in that order) and, in terms of humour, like physical Dumb and Dumber-style slapstick.
– Series writer and executive producer Greg McGee on the elements of the show falling into place, on the Hard Out website
He even gets into school uniform when he’s trying to bond with Noodle – a grown man with a ponytail and little grey shorts pulled up far too high.
– Owen Black describes his character Brian's wardrobe, on the Hard Out website
Jeff’s pretty much just what I was a few years ago – doesn’t pay much attention to anything else around him, not highly interested in school and just out to have a good time and enjoy what he thinks he enjoys, without much attention to the consequences.
– Actor Ben Castles describes his character, Jeff, on the Hard Out website
