Intrepid Journeys - Turkey (Trelise Cooper)

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2005

I haven't laughed so much in a long time.
– Trelise Cooper looks back on her trip to Turkey
Ooh, very Phantom of the Opera! This is so beautiful. It would look amazing with a catwalk down the middle.
– Trelise Cooper, beneath Topkapi Palace in Istanbul
...a girl's gotta have her shoes! The packing list said two pairs. Two pairs? So I've got three...and then two more. Anyway, I'm happy! I don't mind carrying it.
– Trelise Cooper
We have stayed at the most fabulous little pensions and little hotels that have really given me the flavour of Turkey. I started this trip out staying at the Hilton, and I've cancelled the Hilton for the way home. The big hotels with the marble in the bathroom — there's something sterile about them that I've really realised in taking this trip.
– Trelise Cooper
Oh my God, this could strip the enamel from your teeth . . . I think I would describe the taste as vinegar and strong black tea, with a little lemon juice.
– Trelise Cooper on the taste of a Turkish wine from Şirince
The packing for this trip has caused me great stress . . . I've never backpacked in my life before, and I'm allowed 10 kilos of luggage. Can you imagine that?
– Trelise Cooper, who ends up going well over her luggage allowance
I'm back in Istanbul after 25 years. Oh my gosh. I remember Turkey as being quite a scary place to come last time. I was held up at the border by the border guards — they only wanted to give me French perfume — but I didn't know that, and I was terrified.
– Trelise Cooper, at the start of her adventure
Thank goodness for gentlemen.
– Trelise Cooper on being given lots of help with her luggage, despite plans to carry it all herself
