Rapper Chase Woods (Wirihana Nikora) returns to his former high school, Palmerston North Boys’ High, for this deeply personal music video. Rapping in both English and te reo Māori, Woods' lyrics reflect on losing his connection to his Māoritanga (Māori culture) and his reo (language) during his school years. Having since embraced his heritage, Woods knows that it’s worth the fight, with 'Maiea' translating in English to "rise up" or to "be fulfilled". Created in conjunction with the Waiata Anthems music series, the music video was directed, shot and edited by multidisciplinary filmmakers Josh Crosland and Nathan Blundell.
Never held my tongue, never will. Never lose your reo, I promise you won't regret the new view.– Lyrics from 'Maiea'
