Nei taku murimuri aroha ki taku kairoro kua whakarere atu rā. / This is my song of grief for my lover who has left and departed.

– Lyrics from Murimuri Aroha

Kāore aroha te ngau kino nei, kei te tau, e. Oho ata ana, me uaua ka ara. /  How great the pain that eats away at me. As the sun rises, it’s hard to get out of bed.

– Lyrics from Murimuri Aroha

Murimuri Aroha is a song of grief and the end of a romantic relationship, It was an exaggeration of what was going on in my life at that point in time. My partner was leaving for Whāngarei to fulfil her dream job the week before I attended Song Hubs so there were a lot of emotions building up to that point. We were set on making it work but there was always that question of what if this doesn’t work out.

– Sasha Te Whare (REED.) on the story behind the writing of Murimuri Aroha, New Zealand Music Commission website, 28 June 2024

I feel like singing in te reo Māori for some reason just resonates and kind of like calms the body down somehow. It's a pretty special feeling.
