I wanted to make my own TV show instead of working on other people's stuff. Plus there weren't many kids TV shows being made in New Zealand at the time, and none of it was travelling overseas. I wanted to change that, and had this crazy idea about a kid who went on an adventure with his two imaginary friends when he got bored.

I'd picked up a lot of skills as a stop frame animator and animation director, but I knew I needed help to build a studio that was skilled enough to ensure the series would do well internationally. So I flew to the UK and took some of the top animators at Aardman Animation out for a drink one night, got them drunk, and convinced them to spend some time in New Zealand helping me set up a studio and train a local team.
