A jandal-shod journey through Kiwi pop culture, documentary Kiwiana takes a light-hearted look at a range of homegrown fashion, art, architecture, attitudes, and icons. Directed by Shirley Horrocks, and shot by Leon Narbey, it features personalities like Gary McCormick, Ginette McDonald and Peter Jackson. Origin stories of national icons like pavlova, jandals and the Buzzy Bee are explored and keen collectors of folk art and crockery are interviewed. Screening at a time (1996) when New Zealanders were beginning to appreciate neglected everyday objects as collectibles, Kiwiana rated highly, inspiring the sequel, Kiwi As.
Very New Zealand, the jandal. But it's been updated for the '90s. Look at that, a chic wedge heel like you'd wear in Milan. And there's one more modification: Made in Taiwan.– Ginette McDonald
