Sweet Lovers

Holidaymakers , Music Video – 1988

from the single Single (1988)

The first single for short-lived Wellington band Holidaymakers was a cover of little-known song 'We Could Be Sweet Lovers', by American Bill Withers. It enjoyed six weeks at number one and was New Zealand's biggest-selling single in 1988. On a low budget director Fane Flaws created a video that captures the song’s infectious brightness and warmth. With a cosy collection of lamps, minimal props and no special effects (bar a flying drum stick) nothing detracts from the compelling performances by vocalists Peter Marshall and Mara Finau. Sweet Lovers won Best Video at the 1988 NZ Music Awards.

It made people realise we can make really good pop music with great videos in New Zealand.
– Holidaymakers guitarist Stephen Jessup on Sweet Lovers, in The Wellingtonian, 25 November 2013
