Auckland-born musician Steph Brown, aka Lips, began writing original music while living in New York in 2010. But she "never planned" to sing her songs until a flatmate's encouragement spurred her on. Silky, r&b tinged single 'Everything to Me' appears on her second EP Look, Listen and in 2012 won Brown the prestigious Silver Scroll songwriting award. The video uses scenes from a 1950s Hollywood Pacific Island romance, washed in sunset pink and orange. Brown's lyrics imagine a break from the daily grind as a toothsome couple frolic in a private paradise, unaware their world is about to change.
Winning the Silver Scroll in 2012 was awesome . . . it gave me a confidence boost. Before that, I'd never really sung before in public. I was playing keyboard for another band and I had a few songs left over that weren't really suitable. I never really liked my voice . . . but my roommate at the time said, 'You should just sing them yourself.' So I did.– Steph Brown (aka Lips), Sunday magazine, 27 March 2015
