Director

Max Currie began his screen career in his early 20s, after joining the reporting team on groundbreaking LGBT+ show Queer Nation. He developed his writing skills during extended time in New York. After making some short films and writing for Shortland Street, Currie's debut feature was nominated for 2014 Moa Awards for Best Director, Writer and Film. Everything We Loved chronicled two magicians dealing with the loss of a child. In 2020 Currie directed Rūrangi, about a trans activist who returns to his hometown. It won an International Emmy, and was the first web series selected for the annual NZ International Film Festival.

There is no default human. Surprise! You, me, all of us, are queerer than Christmas. There is no normal — enjoy it. Max Currie
