Performance group The Front Lawn (Don McGlashan, Harry Sinclair) stretch all of their prolific talents in this kooky Truly, Madly, Deeply style short. An eerie body-shifting whistled tune precedes Ben (McGlashan) finding his partner Linda (Jennifer Ward-Lealand) dead in bed. Then things get stranger: Linda’s ghost catches up with an old lover Victor (Sinclair) and faces a life-changing dilemma, while her body — awol with a tennis player on Tamaki Drive — has other plans. The surreal romance was made for TVNZ; it won best short at the 1990 NZ Screen Awards.
Jack Body, OMNZ, composed for everything from gamelan orchestra to the Kronos Quartet, and been described as a leading figure in awakening local interest in Asian and Pacific music. His soundtrack compositions ranged across children’s tales, te reo dramas and natural history films. Body’s collaborations with director Vincent Ward include early classic Vigil, and (with John Gibson), 2008’s Rain of the Children. He passed away on 10 May 2015.
Pioneers of early Kiwi electronica, The Body Electric was formed from the remnants of the punk band The Steroids. The Wellingtonians became one of the first electro-dance acts to succeed on alternative radio, with their debut single 'Pulsing' spending four months in the Top 50. It laid the foundations for an explosion of the New Zealand mid-1980s club scene but the group didn't hang around to see the era through - disbanding after the release of their debut album Presentation and Reality.
Without the NZ Film Commission, the list of Kiwi features and short films would be far shorter. In celebration of the Commission turning 40, this collection gathers up movie clips, plus documentaries and news coverage of Kiwi films. Among the directors to have had a major leg up from the Commission are Geoff Murphy, Peter Jackson, Taika Waititi and Gaylene Preston.
