Bread Winner

Short Film (Full Length) – 2015

Don't pretend you don't remember! Countdown, aisle three, December second, 2013.
– The Avenger (Barnaby Fredric) faces off against Harper Harrison (Sam Bunkall)
It was a blast. We were worried to begin with but all the songs were epic. It's Les Miserables mixed with Kill Bill for bread.
– Chess Club team member Paul Harrop on Bread Winner, Stuff, 6 July 2015
You took my bread, you took my life, you took my friends, you took my wife — well technically it wasn't you, it was the things you made me do!
– The Avenger (Barnaby Fredric) details his beef against Harper Harrison (Sam Bunkall) in song
Character: Harper Harrison, thoughtless. Line of dialogue: "Oh, really?" Prop: Bread. Required shot: Match cut/match dissolve.
– Required elements for the 2015 48Hours contest
Initially I felt a bit sick. It was only after we hit upon the idea at 4am Saturday that I started having fun and it grew from there.
– Chess Club team member Barnaby Fredric on learning that the team had been assigned musical as their genre, Flicks website, 8 July 2015
Bread Winner has perhaps the greatest 48 Hour song ever with their opening number 'Two Years'. Brilliantly dark and suitably catchy, it does the necessary job of introducing the story and the road ahead. That sequence is also superbly shot, edited and acted — it's the full package and an impressive way to kick things off ... weaknesses? Not many. Perhaps the story is a bit too ludicrous if you give it too much thought, but this is supposed to be an over the top musical so it matters little.
– 'MistaTees' reviews the film, on the 48Hours website
We were trying to output the film and the loading bar was stuck at zero per cent for around five minutes. A restart solved the issue. Together we watched back what we had made and we frantically tried to fix various sound and syncing issues on the way to the hand in.
– Director Tom Cottle on rushing to complete the film in the final hour before deadline, Flicks website, 8 July 2015
