He was the first black ever to play for New Zealand in South Africa and he played marvellous rugby. It was God's will without doubt that he should play this rugby and they were really a bit upset.

I remember a fellow called Bob Burgess who ... made the All Blacks in the early 70s, and he had long hair down to his shoulders and a moustache. And this was unknown that a rugby player and particularly an All Black would look like his peers and contemporaries ... people began to talk about "trendies" and "wankers" and I think I began to understand quite clearly around about then that I was a trendy and a wanker.
