I had written a couple of feature-length screenplays while living in Europe which I was trying to get made; but being 21 or 22 at the time made it quite a hard sell no matter which way you looked at it. So I returned to Aotearoa to shoot what eventually became In Passing. Despite also working for years on more commercial projects, and therefore having a good handle on the practical mechanics of filmmaking, the divide between anything I’d previously done and the reality of making a movie was a large, but satisfying, leap.
