Intrepid Journeys - Turkey and Iran (Simon Gault)

Television (Full Length Episode) – 2011

When I found out I was going to Iran, I was excited but I had this picture in my mind that it's kinda like what you see on the movies. But it's so not the case: the people are genuine, friendly — it's what us Kiwis love, is people like that.
– Presenter Simon Gault at the end of this episode
When I found out I was heading to Turkey, the first thing I thought about was the food. But along the way, I've discovered a culture and wonderful people and beautiful scenery, and churches and mosques . . . gets you thinking other than just food.
– Presenter Simon Gault
I love food that's made with some passion and some love and some care. And nine times out of 10, the best meal you'll have will be in the cheap little corner restaurant, hiding away. Those are the ones that the locals go to, and they're tried and they're proven.
– Presenter Simon Gault tries some Turkish food
I love New Zealand's customs officers now. They're fantastic, they are the world's best — in comparison to crossing into Iran. Three hours in the queue to do a process that took literally 30 seconds.
– Presenter Simon Gault on Iran's border staff
My mates at home are all saying I'll never cope with this non five-star stuff, but I'll prove them wrong.
– Presenter Simon Gault, at the start of this episode
Getting off the tourist route and meeting locals . . . That's the bit that I love discovering.
– Presenter Simon Gault on what he loves about travelling
