Johnstone's Journey - Settling for Suburbia

Television (Full Length Episode) – 1978

22 Nov 2018 - 01.36pm
As a 35 year old who's only ever known suburbia and traffic congestion, this was fascinating to watch. Modern day Massey still struggles to build community spirit, and I wonder how much of that is related to the rush of house building that left out communal spaces and forced people to instead build a more individualised culture. Luckily, there are plenty of amazing parks and useful shopping centres now, and the Massey Matters community hubs are an excellent if underused and underfunded resource.

What an intelligent insightful doco. Just shows how dumbed down our media is now.

I agree with Dave. As a former Massey resident, I'm fairly disturbed to hear my own opinions expressed 40 years ago, before it was even built up, and before the daily traffic jams along Triangle and Don Buck Road.

More of this, please. We don't seem to have these same quality documentaries about the places we live and work anymore.

Great stuff - thank you NZ On Screen.

This was utterly fascinating. How fortunate are we that stuff like this was getting made about New Zealand in the 1970's! And is now available to us in digital format over 40 years later! Super cool.

I would love to watch more episodes from this series - it looks like only the fifth episode is available for now?

Thank you to the team behind Johnstone's Journey, and NZ On Screen for making this video available.
