Documentary series Neighbourhood introduces small and diverse New Zealand communities through the eyes of a well-known local. This episode visits Auckland's wild and windy Piha Beach, guided by actor Mark Mitchinson (High Road, Human Traces). Four newcomers to Aotearoa who now call Piha home are profiled: a jeweller from Argentina, an arrowhead collector from New Mexico, a home baker from England and a Korean-American mother with a fascinating family history. Mitchinson waxes lyrical about his own English and Irish roots, particularly how Celtic culture has affinity with Māori culture.
Forty kilometres from Auckland, Piha can be wild, wet, windswept, lashed by storms rolling in from the Tasman Sea. Roads get blocked, power goes down, phones get cut off! You have to have something of the pioneering spirit to settle here.– Mark Mitchinson introduces Piha
