Savage Play - Full Series

Television (Full Length Episodes) – 1995

Episode One
Pony (Peter Kaa) must leave his mother (Rena Owen) and grandfather (Wi Kuki Kaa), to join the NZ Natives rugby team. Pony's motivation isn’t just rugby-related — he hopes to find his English father, who he has never met. The Natives have an early supporter in the Earl (Ian Richardson), a rugby fan intrigued by the novelty of these stimulating rivals. He invites Pony to go hunting, where Pony again meets the Earl's granddaughter Charlotte (Liza Walker).

Episode Two
Courted by English society, Pony joins a shoot with the Earl and the Prince of Wales (Peter Bland). He's also a novelty performing in the music halls. Pony hopes to renew his acquaintance with Charlotte, but there are matches to be played in London. The mission to find his father does not go as planned, but Pony's disappointment is more than compensated after he encounters Charlotte in the city.

Episode three
The romance between Pony and Charlotte gathers momentum. While Charlotte’s grandfather sends confusing signals about how he feels, the Cambridge University rugby team makes clear their displeasure at a Māori rugby player daring to cross class and racial lines. Pony returns to New Zealand, where he tries to reconcile his duties with his love for Charlotte.
