Tagata Tangata 2 - Ngaa Kaitiaki Te Moananui-a-kiwa / Guardians of the Lands and Seas (Episode Two)

Television (Full Length Episode) – 1993

This episode explores the deep interdependence between the peoples of Polynesia, and the land and sea. There is footage of Samoa’s Palolo rising fishing ceremony, and a Tongan master fisherman’s use of ancient song and instrument to call octopus. Carver Pakariki Harrison describes the Māori people’s deep spiritual and personal link to the land, and a traditional gardener in Hawai'i connects his children to their land and their stories. The importance of community is a common theme. The power and importance of land and sea among the Polynesian peoples is demonstrated across this oceanic family.

We walk with one foot on the land and the other in the sea. We are island people as much at home in the sea as on land.
