I remember going to On the Mat in Wellington town hall many moons ago with my Dad and Uncle and seeing Mr Fuji against Rick Martell. Samoa Joe was my favorite wrestler and back then it was no holds barred especially the Shek putting his mark on many wrestlers forehead. Who can forget that formidable tune ....😅

Can someone confirm for me if this was the wrestling that was held in Hillsborough. My Dad used to participate his wrestling name was Tony Glassie, I'm just looking for footage or articles.

I used to watch On the Mat on a Sunday avro back in the early to late 70s. Went to the Founders Theatre in Hamilton in about 1975 and saw King Curtis beat Don Morocco using a rather 'indecent' hold. Yelled myself hoarse and couldn't talk the next day.

I really like On the Mat. It was a great show and Steve Rickard was a great wrestler.

@BLACK: the two episodes of On the Mat that are on NZ On Screen are the only two episodes remaining in TVNZ's archive. If viewers have more episodes (eg. on VHS) and they were in OK condition we'd happily look to rights clear them and get them up onsite. Get in touch! Otherwise, enjoy!
@Ray and Val: we have a 1968 episode of Country Touch presented by Tex Morton: http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/the-country-touch-1968
