It's in the Genes Girls

Television (Full Length) – 1993

This TV One documentary introduces three sets of mother/daughter artists, and asks whether art is in the genes. Interviewing each other about their creative lives are actor Kate Harcourt and actor/acting teacher Miranda Harcourt; weaver Erenora Puketapu-Hetet and weaver/painter Veranoa Hetet; and painter Jacqueline Fahey and performer/sculptor Augusta McDonald. Frank yet loving discussions abound, like when Hetet tells her mother "sometimes you come up with silly things". Director Aileen O'Sullivan knows her topic well: three of her daughters (and a son) have also worked in the screen industry.

That was the time, you see, where anything to do with Māori was worthless, including weaving, and it's Te Māori exhibition and I had to go out of the country to New York to be recognised as what they call art.
– Weaver Erenora Puketapu-Hetet, on how Māori were viewed in the early 1980s
