The Life and Times of Te Tutu - Series Two

Television (Full Length) – 2001

The settlers’ schemes keep coming — and chief Te Tutu (Pio Terei) continues to cut them down to size in this sharp-witted colonial satire. In this second series, the foibles and follies of the British newcomers are on full display as they try to trick and trade with Te Tutu and his whānau. They attempt to bamboozle Te Tutu into selling more of his land, with convoluted technology, jargon and plots. Issues such as dog tax, police, tourism, and the right to vote are picked apart and poked fun at by Te Tutu and his whānau, who can’t see the practicality in any of the Pākehā plans. The cast includes early appearances by Jason Hoyte, Rachel House, Jonny Brugh and Alison Routledge. Read the full episode guide here.

Smoking’s very dashing and debonair. You simply inhale that long, cold tobacco flavour and exhale that ghostly stream of cool, grey mist and look ever so charming and sophisticated.
– Herrick (Jonny Brugh) teaches Hine Toa and Tu Meke how to smoke, in episode one
