Hero image for Kātuarehe

Kātuarehe (meaning “outstanding”) is a sassy, feel-good anthem blending English and Te Reo Māori lyrics conveying a message of confidence. Written at APRA Reo Māori SongHubs’ intensive songwriting bootcamp, the track went on to win the 2024 Silver Scroll Award for New Zealand songwriting. The music video channels a ’90s energy, with Anna Coddington dancing in front of colourful vintage graphics, sporting a slew of playful outfits. The video was directed by Fen Ikner, whose own band Lips are known for their bold, camp imagery. Coddington has also spoken about the song on Māori music series Waiata Anthems.

Kātuarehe is a character song, like 'I'm too cool for you, you could never' kind of attitude... big mana energy.
– Anna Coddington discussing the song, in Waiata Anthems 2024
