All Your Ships Have Sailed

Troy Kingi , Music Video – 2020

from the album The Ghost of Freddy Cesar (2020)

In 2020 Troy Kingi released The Ghost of Freddie Cesar. The deeply personal album featured songs based on "memories or approximations" of a tape made by his muso Dad who went missing in 2005. 'All Your Ships Have Sailed' is immediately nostalgic; a funky, slinky song Kingi says is "part me, part Freddie". The video touches on the musician's parental quest symbolised by a mysterious and powerful cassette. Kingi, keeping the 70s vibes alive in his kaftan and shades, slips into a dream state and assumes multiple roles: including a policeman and a criminal. The song won Kingi a songwriting Silver Scroll.

My dad was a muso, he’d listen to Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Bread, Chicago. A typical Māori. Doobie Brothers, Eagles. Always Hendrix.
– Troy Kingi on his dad's musical tastes, Radio New Zealand, September 2020
