In 2020 Troy Kingi released The Ghost of Freddie Cesar. The deeply personal album featured songs based on "memories or approximations" of a tape made by his muso Dad who went missing in 2005. 'All Your Ships Have Sailed' is immediately nostalgic; a funky, slinky song Kingi says is "part me, part Freddie". The video touches on the musician's parental quest symbolised by a mysterious and powerful cassette. Kingi, keeping the 70s vibes alive in his kaftan and shades, slips into a dream state and assumes multiple roles: including a policeman and a criminal. The song won Kingi a songwriting Silver Scroll.
My dad was a muso, he’d listen to Black Sabbath, Led Zep, Bread, Chicago. A typical Māori. Doobie Brothers, Eagles. Always Hendrix.– Troy Kingi on his dad's musical tastes, Radio New Zealand, September 2020
