Episode One - Casting
After a nationwide search led by presenter and judge Sara Tetro, 33 models are sent to Queenstown to help determine the final 13 who will compete. Judge (and model) Colin Mathura-Jeffree is joined by special guest, model Angela Dunn, to review the girls' runway walks. Guest photographer Monty Adams then takes the swimsuit shoot, which helps determine which 20 competitors will be going home. The final selection then head to Auckland, to get settled into the "top model house." Tensions are already running high amongst the models, especially with the highly confident Hosanna.
Episode Two - The Girls Fly High
In this jam-packed episode, Colin Mathura-Jeffree coaches the models in how to pose in front of a (very powerful) wind machine! Next, they are challenged to style a look in five minutes at the clothing store Max, where they meet Fashion Quarterly editor Stacy Gregg and Meegan Webster, design manager at Max. For the photoshoot captured by Jackie Meiring, the girls pose on top of vintage aeroplanes in a homage to female pilot Jean Batten. After receiving feedback from the judging panel, the first of the 13 girls is sent home (and is not happy about it at all).
Episode Three - The Girls Take The Streets
Hip-hop dance group Urban Beat lead the 12 models in a dance class, which almost everyone finds awkward and embarrassing (Sarah even refuses to participate). They take this experience into the next challenge; a rooftop runway show where the girls must incorporate hip-hop poses into their walks. Next is a wintery shoot at Snowplanet with regular photographer Craig Owen, where Sarah is also unable to participate, this time due to a headache. Angela Dunn joins the judging panel again, during which another girl is sent home.
Episode Four - The Girls Get Transformed
The models have arrived at a famous milestone in the Top Model franchise — the makeover episode! Led by stylist Paul Huege de Serville, the models are all given new looks, and for some, the change is drastic (and emotional). Next they head to Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium to model the clothes of Australian designer Kirrily Johnston, where Teryl-Leigh and Laura are scolded for their unprofessionalism. Guest photographer Hannah Richards completes a shoot in which the models are transformed into underwater creatures — which helps determine who is sent home.
Episode Five - The Girls Pose in Haute Couture
Five episodes in, the girls are reflecting on how serious the competition is becoming. Presenter/judge Sara Tetro comes by the house to ask the group a hard question; who do they think has the most potential, and who has the least? Tensions are high after the girls answer honestly. Next they participate in a five minute make-up challenge hosted by makeup artist Stefan Knight and Covergirl representative Chris Kennedy-Grant. The photoshoot is the first haute couture shoot of the season, with Karen Inderbitzen-Waller shooting the girls on a windy beach. Another model is sent home in a particularly emotional elimination.
Episode Six - The Girls Are Diamonds in the Rough
The girls begin with a casual beach photoshoot, which also features popular Kiwi model Ngahuia Williams. Next the models get athletic, when they test out Max's athleisure wear on gymnastics equipment. Max's retail manager (and part-time model) Makaia Carr is there to observe, and Ajoh is unable to participate fully due to cultural reasons. The photoshoot this week is for Michael Hill Jewellery: the girls get behind the wheel of a very fancy (and stationary) sports car. Two previous front-runners end up in the bottom two at judging, much to everyone's surprise.
Episode Seven - Cycle One Rewind (Recap)
This recap episode reflects on the previous seven episodes, including footage that didn't originally screen. Over the past six weeks, the contestant number has gone from 33 to only eight, and there's a lot of footage left on the cutting room floor. The episode includes some raw moments from the models, including confessions, secrets and arguments.
Episode Eight - The Girls Get Dirty
It's a busy week, with the models first appearing in a music video for rock band Autozamm, directed by Ed Davis. The video requires them to wear both 1960s dresses and goofy circus costumes. Next the girls take on a VJing challenge, presenting on music channel C4 alongside Jermaine Leef; they are directed by C4's Jacquie Brown. Finally, the photoshoot is a collaboration with the finalists from Cleo's Bachelor of the Year competition, shot by guest photographer Russ Flatt. This causes some upset from Laura, who worries about her boyfriend's reaction. Cleo magazine editor Shelley Ferguson joins the judging panel.
Episode Nine - The Girls Go Down Under
First the models are paired with a student designer, who is tasked with creating an outfit from $40 worth of second-hand clothing. The girls then model the looks on a catwalk, where Hosanna's cheeky wink goes down badly with the judges. For the photoshoot taken by regular Craig Owen, the girls are photographed in a 1950s vintage style, each of them portraying a different emotion. Then the models travel across the ditch, to have their elimination segment in Sydney, with chef Morgan McGlone as a special guest. But there's a twist; Australia was merely a pit stop — the remaining girls are off to Los Angeles!
Episode Ten - The Girls Hit The Runway To L.A.
The final six models arrive in Los Angeles for a hectic week of challenges. First they stop by the Los Angeles division of Next Model Management, where veterran Alexis Borges gives the girls some tough feedback. Then it's a trip to the Los Angeles Fashion District, where the girls are given 30 minutes and US$75 to buy a full outfit. Three of the girls then spend time in the hotel fish tank as live models, before the full group undertakes the main challenge; a Covergirl cosmetics challenge supervised by Chris Kennedy-Grant. Nigel Barker, a photographer and judge on America's Next Top Model, surprises the girls by being their photographer for shot under the Santa Monica Pier.
Episode Eleven - The Girls Go See The City
The models are back in Auckland and meet with Colin Mathura-Jeffree and model Nikki Phillips to hear about their next challenge; doing "go sees" — an industry term for models visiting agencies and clients for networking. They meet with top New Zealand designers Huffer, Trelise Cooper and Zambesi. The next photoshoot, with Chris Sisarich, takes place on Michael Hill's incredible yacht, where the models play 1980s elite socialites. At the elimination, another person goes home, leaving just five models.
Episode Twelve - The Girls Get Ready To Rumble
The models start the week with PR training, as they are put to the test with Wendyl Nissen, a former gossip columnist — and she isn't pulling any punches. The girls are then sent to a pamper day at a spa, before learning it is actually a challenge, and they have to be spokespeople for one of the Nivea beauty products used on them! Nivea representative Merilyn Havler watches on, adding extra pressure. They then head into the boxing ring for the week's athletic photoshoot; styled by Atip, shot by Craig Owen, and coached by professional boxer Monty Betham.
Episode Thirteen - The Girl Who Becomes New Zealand's Next Top Model
It's the final three! The models complete individual photoshoots for Cleo magazine with regular photographer Chris Sisarich and modelling coach Colin Mathura-Jeffree, who reflect on how far the girls have come through the series. Cleo editor Shelley Ferguson joins the judging panel where one girl is sent home, leaving the final two to complete a major runway challenge. In front of New Zealand fashion's biggest players — including Trelise Cooper — the girls complete a full runway show alongside some of those who were previously eliminated. After reviewing the two finalists' full portfolios from across the 13 episodes, the judges decide who will be New Zealand's Next Top Model.
