This episode of community-made show Open Door focuses on Chinese New Zealanders who deal with two identities: the Chinese values of their parents, and the country they live in. Andrew Young rebelled against the hard-working ways of his parents, but gained a new perspective after travelling to China and witnessing the level of poverty. Wong Liu Shueng recalls her "two-tiered" childhood jumping between languages, but wishes she hadn't kept her Chinese culture hidden. The people interviewed have embraced the positive aspects of experiencing two different cultures.
We lived this very two-tiered life. We spoke perfect English in the fruit shop, and then we walked through a door, we spoke Chinese.– Wong Liu Shueng
