Writer/director Yamin Tun's short Wait won two awards at the New Zealand International Film Festival, including Best NZ Short Film. Set in the 1980s, the story centres around young Joyena (Joyena Sun) and her relationship with her depressed mother Xiao Hu Diep (Katlyn Wong from comedy show A Thousand Apologies). Every day Joyena, her Mum and her brothers wait for their doctor father Shen Wei (Yee Yang Lee) at the hospital, but when Wei decides to leave his family the non-English speaking Xiao struggles to cope. Tun was inspired by her own childhood as a Burmese immigrant living in the United Kingdom.
The word 'wait' is evocative for me and many asylum seekers because we spent so many years waiting for immigration status. Many of my memories are of waiting on plastic chairs in immigration halls for another stamp on a piece of paper.– Writer/director Yamin Tun on the significance of calling her film Wait, The NZ Herald 27 September 2016
