Brit-born actor and director John Callen moved to New Zealand at age 16, and began his media career as a writer and reporter. He then became a professional actor in 1975, joining Wellington's Downstage theatre. Onscreen, Callen has played dwarves (in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit), PM David Lange (The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior) and villainous DJs (Send a Gorilla). His distinctive voice has graced dozens of documentaries and commercials, including the long-running series Wild South. Callen has also directed, helming The Tribe, Battle of Britain doco The Kiwi Who Saved Britain and many episodes of Shortland Street
