An episode of the 1974 documentary series Tangata Whenua, this programme looks at the Kingitanga (King Movement), illustrating why a movement formed in the Waikato in the 19th century to halt land sales and promote Māori authority has contemporary relevance. The script (written by Michael King and director Barry Barclay) won a Feltex Award. The groundbreaking series (remarkably, first screened in primetime on Sunday nights) took viewers into a Māori world then still foreign to many New Zealanders. The series was produced by John O'Shea.
