All Blacks for Africa - A Black and White Issue

It’s very hard for us as New Zealanders to judge South Africa after only being here two weeks.

We grew up through the 1960s and 70s and saw the 1981 tour - they were our greatest foe and as a rugby player I became an All Black and I just assumed I would never go to South Africa. So to get the opportunity was a dream come true and to be there through all of that for the comings and goings at that time was an amazing experience.

For South Africans the ultimate is to play the All Blacks

The All Blacks were very proud of their status in South Africa as a multi-racial side: in fact half of the team were of a Māori or Pacific Island background. And while the prime objective of the tour was winning rugby matches, many players took their position as role models very seriously. In New Zealand the game has greatly benefitted from blending the talents of different racial groups. South Africa has that same opportunity, if it wants to take it.
