Kiwi Bill Gavin began his film career in the United Kingdom. After arranging finance for everything from The Killing Fields to Sid and Nancy, he returned home in the 1990s to produce a number of features, including What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and Jubilee. During two years as Head of Feature Films at South Pacific Pictures, he helped develop and finance 2002 hit Whale Rider. Gavin passed away on 26 May 2020.

Biography

Wellington-born Bill Gavin grew up largely in Auckland. His interest in boating was soon overtaken by a growing passion for cars. Gavin began writing about motor racing for The Auckland Star and Dunedin Evening Star. Soon he was sharing a house in England with Kiwi racers George Lawton and future world champion Denny Hulme, after winning a contract to write about Kiwi drivers competing overseas.
