When Duncan Garner began co-presenting TV3's current affairs show 3rd Degree in 2013, he already had 17 years in television behind him — much of it in the press gallery. Garner started at TVNZ in the mid 1990s as a political reporter, after studying Communications at Auckland University of Technology. Following time on Holmes, he joined TV3 in 2003. Four years later he became the channel's political editor, and was named Qantas TV Journalist of the Year. In 2017, after a stint on current affairs show The Nation, Garner became lead host on Three's new morning slot The AM Show. In 2021, citing brutal hours, he quit "the best job ever".

“He says there's pretty much no difference between him on the telly and off, that what you see is what you get, and that's about right.”

Writer Michele Hewitson on Duncan Garner, The NZ Herald, 3 April 2010
